Detonation Arrestors

How do Tornado Detonation Arrestors work?

Detonation Propagation Protection

The Tornado Detonation Arrestor employs a completely distinct concept for internal design and construction when compared to standard engineering practice and technology by other manufacturers.

Utilizing a diverse series of stainless steel grid assemblies, combined with our practically indestructible Alumina Ceramic flame cell media, means we can offer the ultimate protection available. Tornado DA’s provide a torturous path for flame fronts to propagate through (bead media), and a large surface area to extract energy from the flame to slow down and quench the flame front. This patented combination prevents flame fronts from proceeding through the detonation arrester.

With this fundamentally unique approach, Tornado Combustion Technologies is able to offer a superior system with performance standards unequalled by any competitor.

Endurance Burn Performance

The Tornado Detonation Arrester also provides protection against the possibility of a flame front being held on the stainless steel grid of the Detonation Arrester (continuous or endurance burn). The Tornado DA works to extract the energy from the stable flame front and release it to the surrounding environment to prevent a stable flame from damaging the detonation arrester and continuing down the pipe.

Tornado Detonation Arresters has been proven to last a minimum of 2 hours under the worst burning conditions, where as a flame arrester may last 5 minutes. This time difference can give operators the time to react and prevent damage to equipment and injury to personnel.

How can the original pressure drop be restored?

Unique to industry, Tornado Detonation Arrestor elements can be cleaned to restore original pressure drops and level of protection.

Tornado Detonation Arrestors utilize Alumina Ceramic Media for flame quenching. This media is contained by a rugged grid system. These grid assemblies are generally only 1" or 1.5" thick, which facilitates easier cleaning. The Alumina Ceramic Media is totally resistant to corrosion and breakdown and is easily cleaned to “like new” condition.

Ceramic bead media before and after cleaning

The cell element can generally be cleaned through the ports with a high-pressure washer to remove surface build up on the element. This can be performed a number of times until it is no longer effective. The complete flame cell assembly can be entirely removed for cleaning if extremely fouled. Once removed, the element can be dismantled by qualified personnel and reconditioned to “like new” condition. The cell design is sturdy enough to withstand sandblasting if circumstances dictate. Reconditioned cells (not a throw away item) provide a tremendous long-term cost savings.

Inspection ports allow easy access for inspection and cleaning. Regular servicing of the units is simple and trouble-free.

Do Tornado DA's have regulatory approval?

Tornado has spent countless hours, effort and dollars in research, testing and redesigning our product to achieve the highest burn ratings on the market.

Our customers realize the greatest length of time to react and correct a potentially dangerous condition in the event of a stabilized burn situation.

  • Tested & passed for entire flame spectrum with no propagation of flame to protected side
  • US Coast Guard approved as Type 1 detonation arresters.
  • Tornado DA’s have been tested to both the USCG standards and CSA standards and passed the tests receiving Type 1 and Class 3 burn ratings respectively.
  • Tornado assisted in creating the CSA standard test method for Inline Flame Arresters and Firebox Flame Arresters CSA Z343-98.
  • Low, medium & high-pressure deflagrations for Group C & D gases (NEC)
  • Overdriven & stable detonations for Group C & D gases (NEC)
  • Installation anywhere in piping configurations vertically, horizontally or at any angle desired
